Sarakiniko

DESCRIPTION:

SARAKINIKO situated 19 kms from Parga, is one of the most beautiful beaches in the area and offers a peaceful and relaxing place to spend a holiday.  The sandy and shingle beach, washed by the crystal clear water of the Ionian sea, has a backdrop of ancient olive groves sloping down to this beautiful bay, providing a unique setting for a family or romantic holiday. Swimming, pedaloes, canoes, fishing, diving and snorkeling are just some of the opportunities for recreation on this lesser known beach of Parga. The delicious Greek cuisine, the refreshing cocktails and the unique hospitality of the four tavernas on this beach, as well as the beautiful sunsets are all priceless, memorable experiences to enjoy, although you cannot compare them to the night time swimming at Sarakiniko.  Undeniably one of the loveliest beaches in the area of Parga.

The name Sarakiniko is taken from the local myth about the Sarakini pirates, who sometime ago, after a sudden summer storm, were shipwrecked and asked for refuge here.  They pretended to be traders and asked for help from the local people of the area.  The locals gladly agreed to help the unfortunate sailors and even invited them to a wedding two days later.  The pirates accepted and even though their boat was ready to sail, they joined the wedding reception.  Having drunk a lot, they started whispering together in their own language so no one could Understand them or hear them, saying dance and be happy bride, because tomorrow night you will be crying in the hold of the ship!  They had in their minds to steal the bride and rob the unfortunate inhabitants, despite all the hospitality and help they had been given.  Unfortunately for them, the bride knew their language and informed the local men.  So the next evening, the women and older men danced pretending all was normal.  The moment the pirates appeared with knives in their hands, sure of the success of their plans, the groom and the young men, who had been hiding, attacked them and threw them out into the bay.  From then on, it kept the name of Sarakiniko.

To Get To Sarakiniko by taxi boat from the port of Parga, is a unique journey, giving everyone the opportunity to see the coastline north of Parga, passing Valtos beach, The Vlacheron Monastery, Iosostis and other small picturesque bays and beaches. To Get To Sarakiniko by Car or Scooter from Parga, you pass through Anthoussa and continue to Aghia.  After the second exit for Aghia, turn left and follow the signs for 3 kms, (at junctions keeping always to the left) and you will reach the beach of Sarakiniko.  The road is asphalt, but narrow in places and requires caution.
